Reflexology – The benefits

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is professional massage applied to identified pressure points (reflex points) on the hands and feet. The specific points reflect systems and organs within the body. When worked, the nervous system is stimulated, which allows the body to address and focus on areas where there may be imbalances.

A treatment also consists of a series of opening effleurage massage movements and gentle stretching.  For a detailed insight into the location of the reflex points and the corresponding parts of the body, visit the Association of Reflexologists website at:

Brief History of Reflexology

Hand and Foot massage has been documented as far back as 4000 BC, as a prolific practice to maintain a healthy mind, body and spirit.

Dr Henry Head (1898) carried out research that illustrated when an internal organ was effected by disease, areas of skin linked to the organ by nerves were found to be sensitive to touch or discoloured. Showing that internal imbalances are reflected in the outer body.

During the 1900’s, pressure points on the hands and feet were identified by physicians to produce analgesic effects. These methods were used and benefited trauma patients with the military.

From ancient, modern and current 21st century medicine, Holistic Therapies such as Reflexology have been recognised as an effective way of helping a person to restore health and vitality after illness, disease and trauma. Primarily, Reflexology is a means to prevent dis-ease and maintain health and well-being.
